A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
