Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
