Are You Able to Crack It? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Shaped the Contemporary World

There are many candidates to claim the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.

As per a new book, however, that honor should go to a automated sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”

Thanks to this speedy mechanical saw, which converted logs into planks with virtually no human effort, the Dutch could build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.

The First Genuine Industrial Device

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted the circular movement to vertical action for the cutting blade. Another component transformed the rotary movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the wood ahead one precise increment per cycle.

“Every component was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate them in order that they acted within a precisely synchronized order, sawing with each downward stroke and moving with each return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”

Which leads us up to the current challenge. I’d like for you to reimagine a key the fundamental ideas behind Corneliszoon’s machine.

Round and Up

Design a machine that turns circular movement to up-and-down motion. You have these items only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or sleeve through which one of the bars will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a base, so that the parts don’t fall down.)

The solution returns later today UK time with the solution.

In the interim, NO SPOILERS. Instead, please propose (less celebrated) candidates as the planet’s most impactful creation.
